Kanonhallen
As of December 31, 2005 Kanonhallen will officially
close for all activities in its present location on
Øster Fælled Square.
The reason for this decision is that Copenhagen County
has decided to cease funding Kanonhallen with a vital
5 million kroner annually under the pool for Small Urban
Theaters in Copenhagen County. Such a decision makes
evident the fact that the County no longer wishes to
support truly experimental art – the precise grounds
for the decision remain unclear, as Kanonhallen has
not received any written or oral explanation from the
County whatsoever.
The attempts of the theater’s management and board
to find other sources of financial funding within the
very short time period necessary were unsuccessful.
Therefore, Kanonhallen cannot continue its activities
in its present home after December 31, 2005.
After 15 years in which Kanonhallen has been an exponent
for experimental theater and the only scene in Denmark
that has given space to avant-garde Danish and international
stage art, Copenhagen now stands without a scene for
this genre. A great deal of experimental Danish and
international stage art is now homeless.
Kanonhallen cannot accept this situation. The independent
institution Kanonhallen will remain active and work
to establish a production platform for experimental
Danish and international performance art. Kanonhallen
will furthermore maintain its network and collaborations
established through 15 years of activities.
How and when this platform will be realized is unknown.
The first step involves projects in which Kanonhallen
has been the principal organizer and in some cases,
have already received funding, such as: UNITS, Thin
Men in Cannons, Live Art 2 You, and the Junge Hunde
Festival. Continuation will take place in conjunction
with other theaters and organizers in Denmark.
Kanonhallen rounds out in December with a co-production:
Roundabout, a New Circus performance by Nova Exit from
December 3-22, 2005. This production is a collaboration
between Kanonhallen, Nova Exit, Copenhagen’s International
Theater, and Artistlinien/AFUK.
